How AI Games Are Transforming Gaming

AI is transforming gaming in ways that were once thought impossible. From mastering chess and Go to generating dynamic game worlds, AI is pushing the boundaries of how games are played and designed. Find out :

While games that feature generative AI are few and far between, it’s an area of the industry that developers are increasingly focusing on. The most prominent example is Tacoma, a narrative-driven sci-fi game in which players investigate an abandoned space station to uncover what happened to its crew and help the ship’s onboard AI ODIN. The game is largely powered by generative AI including both OpenAI’s whisper for voice synthesizing and text to speech and Sony’s GPT-4 and Llama 3 for synthesis, character animation and decision making.

The Role of AI in Creating Immersive VR Game Experiences

One of the most promising uses of generative AI is in NPC behavior. Using pathfinding algorithms and behavior trees, generative AI can create NPCs with more realistic, adaptive and emotionally expressive behavior. This allows the NPCs to react to player actions more authentically and leads to a more immersive, compelling gaming experience.

However, many developers are still skeptical about the use of generative AI. Jess Bradley, an artist at Obsidian Entertainment who worked on narratively acclaimed titles such as Pentiment and Fallout New Vegas believes that growing talk of AI is making gamers “think about what they love about games – sharing experiences crafted by other humans.” While she has serious personal reservations about using generative AI to automate creativity, she does believe that it could bear some of the repetitive administrative tasks involved in game creation.
